About Us

Gray Composting Services Ltd is a company providing a safe and effective route for disposal of the sea fish waste generated by the Shellfish and Fish processing industry in the North-East of Scotland.

Based at Ley Farm, Fordyce, Aberdeenshire the existing farm buildings have recently been converted to create an organic waste treatment facility that is able to meet the standards required for approval under the ABP regulations. The new infrastructure includes an upgraded access road, a weigh-bridge, concrete hard standing, a reception / maturation building, two vessel VCU’s (vertical compost units) and a storage and maturation area. The facility has full planning approved by the local Planning Authority, a Waste Management Licence and is currently undergoing State Veterinary Service (SVS) assessment.

The majority of the biodegradable organic waste intended for treatment at the facility would have been traditionally disposed of at local municipal landfill sites. However this option is no longer available under the ABP regulations and much of this waste is currently being transferred out with the Region. This facility addresses the proximity issue and provides a much-needed local processing solution for food, fish and catering businesses.

Wood waste is used to provide the additional organic material to provide a structured fill material for the VCU composting units. Although, the majority of this wood waste material is recovered for re-use in the screening process after the in-vessel composting.

As well as the market for the finished PAS100: 2005 Compost produced by the processing facility Gray’s have identified a local demand from local farmers who are seeking to move to Organic farm production and are looking for organic natural fertilizers / compost to replace traditional chemical fertilizers.
